3.5 billion years old fossil discovered!

Something that has every possibility to be the oldest fossil on Earth gets into prominence accompanying colorful picture of our microbial ancestors from nearly 3.5 billion years ago. The fossil happens to be the remains of what once was a purple-and-green slimy, smelly mat of single cell microbes that worked, lived and even communicated in what is a lot like a prehistoric microscopic society.

According to the researchers, Nora Nora Noffke of Old Dominion University in the US discovered the fragments of this life in sandstone rock in western Australia. That's been apparently destined to be our own ancestor.  Further known from the study co-author Robert Hazen, a mineralogist at the Carnegie Institution of Science in Washington who said that this tiny fossilized mat, about one-third of an inch (8.3 millimeters) thick would be about 300 million years older than previous complete ancient fossils. At the same time nearly the same age as less complete and still debatable fossils.
