The Indian sportsperson and a star shuttler Saina Nehwal has been appointed as the member of International Olympic Committee (IOC)’s Athletes’ Commission. On Monday night Saina received a letter from the IOC President Thomas Bach, according to the reports.
The letter said, “Following your candidature for the elections of the IOC Athletes’ Commission during the Olympic Games Rio 2016, it is with great pleasure to appoint you in consultation with the Chair, as Member of the Athletes’ Commission.”
The next meeting of the Athletes’ commission, which is chaired by Angela Ruggerio and comprises nine vice presidents and ten other members, is scheduled for November 6.
Saina has received the appointment just when she has resumed practice after recovering from a knee-injury, which resulted her exit from the Rio Olympics. In an interview Saina, who sustained intra-articular injury (inside the joint) to her right knee, said that she is hoping to play tournaments in November if everything went well.
Expressing happiness over her appointment to the Olympic panel, Saina’s father Harvir Singh said, “I have become very emotional. It is a matter of great privilege for us that they recognized her and to be a part of the IOC. They thought that she could be of some use. She lost (a medal in the Olympics) because of the injury. We are proud of her.”
