Khalistan Liberation Force chief Harminder Singh Mintoo, who had escaped from the high-security Nabha Central Jail in Punjab’s Patiala, was arrested in a joint operation by the Punjab Police and the Special Crime Branch of the Delhi Police from the Delhi railway station.
"Mintoo has been arrested from Delhi railway station by Delhi police," said a senior official of Punjab police in Chandigarh. "We passed on the information about Mintoo following which Delhi police arrested him," official said.
“The cases against him were very weak and in most of the cases he is described as the main conspirator. He has not been accused of direct involvement in any alleged militant activity,” Mintoo’s lawyer Jaspal Singh Manjhpur said.
12 to 14 armed men, in police uniform, entered the high-security Nabha Central Jail in Punjab's Patiala district and attacked guards and released Mintoo. The assailants helped the prisoners to escape had hidden the weapons in blankets, witnesses said.
UP police, later in the evening, arrested Parminder Singh alias Painda, who had played a key role in planning and executing the jailbreak, from Kairana in Shamli district.
Punjab government had sacked two senior prison officials, Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent and suspended ADGP (Jails) and formed an SIT to probe the jail break. It had ordered an inquiry committee headed by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Jagpal Singh Sandhu to look into the "security lapses".
